In scenes containing strong light and shadow arrangements, paint it using color complements. For example, push the chromatic intensity of your light families into yellows, and yellow grays, while purples will dominate the shadow families. The most challenging of complement combinations is the red/green complement, because they are both medium values in their creation. In the painting right, the distance is blue, and the foreground is orange. Often the inspiration is close, but you’ll push the boundaries of your palette knowledge by composing with the color complements.
